The Modern Monarchy of Britain Essay - 1676 Words

When one thinks of Britain, perhaps the first thing that comes to mind is the iconic figures of the Royal Family. This hallowed line of descendants makes up the British Monarchy, serving above the people of the Commonwealth under the control of Britain. With such fanfare and dignity come an equally great responsibility. While the structure and ceremonial hype surrounding the British Monarchy has remained nearly unchanged since its creation, the role and powers of Britains current Monarchy is significantly different. The British Monarchy is composed of a King or Queen and their family, whose heirs inherit the throne when the King or Queen dies. The current Royal family is known as the â€Å"House of Windsor† and was created in 1917†¦show more content†¦Each of the children of these members receives a formal title when her or she is married, and until that point is a Prince or Princess (Hoey 4). When the King or Queen dies, the family follows a distinct order of success ion. The Monarchy follows a â€Å"male primogeniture† system, in which oldest sons are chosen over younger sons, and male children are chosen over females, regardless of age (â€Å"About the British Royal Family†). Should there be no direct male heir, a female is made Queen. The spouses of male children who become King are permitted to take the title of Queen; however, the spouses of female children who become Queen are not allowed to take the title of King. Instead, they are given an honorary title of Prince (â€Å"The Monarchy†). The obviously most important member of the Royal Family is the King or Queen. Currently, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary holds the title of Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her sixtieth anniversary of her coronation on February 6, 2012, making her the second longest ruling Monarch behind Queen Victoria (â€Å"The Queen and the UK†). Elizabeth is only the sixth Queen to ever rule over the British Monarchy. She is able to trace her family line back to the first king of England, being the thirty-second great granddaughter of King Alfred (Simpson). Parenting in Hamlet by William Shakespeare Essays

The role parents play in a child’s development is critical. They are the people who have the most influence on them, effecting most aspects of even their adult life. When too controlling, the role of a parent can have lasting negative consequences for the child. In the play, Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, the author shows that loss of an authoritative parent leaves people trying to replace the loss of that control in unhealthy ways that destroy the person. This can be seen in the lives of Ophelia, Hamlet and Laertes, who all loose a controlling father. In the life of Ophelia, it can be seen that she is very dependant on Polonius. She obeys him, even if she doesn’t want to. When she is told by Polonius, â€Å"I would not, in plain terms, from†¦show more content†¦Ophelia is accustomed to having her father speak on her behalf, as well as being dependent on him for emotional support. Her absolute dependence means Ophelia does not know how to cope and reason on her own. Being left to grieve alone, she does not have an objective perspective or someone to bring her back to her senses, and therefore becomes overwhelmed by her emotions. Having no control over the intensity of how to feel and act is a very unhealthy way to cope. Her grief makes her speak â€Å"nothing†, and those who hear her are left to doubt and â€Å"think there might be thought†, although they cannot be sure about what she really means. Allowing herself to continually feel her grief without support and guidance causes Ophelia to lose her mind. Satire in Huck Finn Essay The journey taken by two people down a river, is rarely thought of as anything more than just an adventure. However, Mark Twain uses his novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, to explore and poke fun of many problems facing American society. Huck, the main character, is considered an uneducated boy who is constantly under pressure to conform to the civilized aspects of society. Jim, who accompanies Huck, is a runaway slave seeking freedom from the world that has denied it to him for so long. In his novel, Twain uses satire to demonstrate many of civilizations problems. In the beginning of the story, Huck sneaks away from his home to play with Tom Sawyer and his friends. The boys start a gang and decide that one of the things they will do is kidnap people, and hold them for ransom. The boys quickly discover that they cannot ransom anyone because they dont know what ransom means. Tom has a theory as to the meaning of the word, But peraps if we keep them till theyre ransomed, it means that we keep them till theyre dead.(12) Without any doubts, all of the boys agree with this meaning of the word. In this segment of the novel, Twain uses satire to demonstrate that even though something may be truly wrong, if civilization or society adopts it to be true, then it is believed to be true. Twain may be specifically using the issue of slavery as his target, in this instance of satire. During the time period in which The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was written, religion was as much an integral part of civilization, as was an education. Religion is one of the key victims of Twains satire throughout the novel. This satire is no more apparent then when Hucks guardian, the Widow Douglas, preaches to him about Moses. Huck didnt think very much of her lecture; Here she was a-bothering about Moses, which was no kin to her, and no use to anybody, being gone, you see(3) Twain uses Huck to exhibit his objection to the blind faith that civilized society places towards religion. During Huck and Jims journey, they encounter two men who refer to themselves as the Duke and the King. Theses characters make their living swindling people out of their money. When they are eventually caught, they pay for their sins by being tarred and feathered. Huck expresses his thoughts on the subject by saying, It was a dreadful thing to see. Human beings can be awful cruel to one another.(294) Through this event, Twain shows that crooks and criminals arent the only ones that can be cruel. The crowd which considers themselves to be civilized and opposing any such imprudent and cruel acts, actually commits one themselves. Twain illustrates how a society that views themselves as civilized can display such irresponsible conduct. Twain uses a boy and a runaway slave in, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, to not only tell a story, but to express what he thinks are the problems of civilized society. Satire is the key tool in which he uses to demonstrate these problems. Through Twains use of satire, we can not only poke fun at American society, but we can learn from its mistakes. Twain turned an ordinary adventure down a river into an exploration of the problems society, especially civilized society, faces. Because of the brilliant way in which Twain intertwines satire into his novel, the lessons in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, will be remembered forever.
